The History of Rock Rowing Club
Rock Rowing Club was formed in 2000 and with an enormous amount of fund raising together with a loan we bought our first gig "Speedwell" in 2001. David Currah of Looe built "Speedwell" and we launched her at Rock in September 2001 just in time to take part in the London River Race (we came 3rd in the mixed class!). Since then the Club has gone from strength to strength and we now have approximately 40 rowing members and nearly two teams of juniors!
Due to the success of the club and to help keep the training pressure off "Speedwell", we bought a fibre-glass gig, "Jane D" that we keep on the dinghy park at Rock. We now row most of the winter on a Sunday, with a break in January to do all necessary maintenance work. We also have two skiffs and a flashboat for members' use when, due to a variety of reasons, there are not enough people on club nights to take a gig out.
