Frequently Asked Questions for Novices
Q: What should I wear to come rowing?
A: Shorts and sandals with something warm on top which can be removed once you have warmed up.
Q: How long are the rowing sessions?
A: A club row usually lasts for about 45mins. Training sessions for an event may take longer.
Q: Can I bring a drink with me?
A: Yes, it is a good idea to bring a drink with you as rowing can make you quite thirsty. We usually have a rest half way when you will have the opportunity to have a drink.
Q: Where do you usually row too?
A: Anywhere in the estuary depending on the tide. Within the time constraints it is very rare that we go outside of the estuary.
Q: Do I need to be able to swim?
A: It is a good idea if you can swim. If you are not able to swim we do have club life jackets.
Q: Are you a social club?
A: Strictly speaking we are not a social club, but we do have social events through out the year. Also sometimes some of us go for a drink after rowing which anyone is welcome to join us.
Q: Am I too old to start rowing?
A: As long you think you can row for 45 minutes with a break in the middle then you are very welcome what ever your age.
Q: Is the club very competitive?
A: The club caters for both people who want to take their rowing up to a high competitive standard as well as those who want to just row non competitively for pleasure.
Q: What happens if there are too many/not enough people to fill a gig.
A: Everyone who turns up (on time!) is guaranteed a row. This may mean that we use a club skiff or flashboat to accommodate the numbers.
